Keep ‘access aisles’

free of plowed snow

As a disability advocacy organization, SPOKES Unlimited is often notified, after a heavy storm, that snow is being piled in a “disabled access” parking spot.

While it may seem a convenient place for snowplow operators to push the snow, people with disabilities are actually being denied the right to park and exit their car in order to access public areas like going to the store to shop and spend money. The white striped “access aisle” is an important part of that space that also needs to remain clear.

At least one accessible parking space (with the access aisle) is required if there are 1-25 parking spots, and many stores only have this one spot available. ORS 447.233 (4) states that the spaces “shall be maintained so as to meet the requirements of this section at all times and to meet the standards established by the state building code.”

So, please, if you are a snowplow operator, the manager of a store, or are in charge of the parking lot maintenance, be considerate of the accessible parking spots and those who have to use them.
