Benefit dinner to support senior services

ALEDO - Genesis Senior Living-Aledo will expand memory care services in Mercer County with a new 16-bed unit opening in September. The Mercer Foundation for Health has partnered with Genesis Senior Living, Aledo to support the renovation, staff training and community education for family members and loved ones with Alzheimer's and related diseases.

The Benefit Dinner and Auction is at 6:30 p.m.Sept. 1 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased by calling (309) 582-9253. Expanded memory care services at Genesis Senior Living-Aledo is a response to an increasing need for memory care not only in the region, but across the country. It is estimated that 3.4 million Americans have dementia. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in 2012, 6.87 percent of Mercer County's residents were affected with Alzheimer's disease or dementia.

The memory care unit at Genesis Senior Living, Aledo will provide a full program of care and activities designed to enhance social and motor skills for residents. A wide array of family support services will also be available.

All of the rooms will be private accommodations and are newly remodeled. "Alzheimer's, memory and dementia care services have a positive impact on the quality of life of residents. Our qualified staff, planned activities and an engaging environment will make our services specifically designed for the care of people with Alzheimer's and related diseases," explained Myron Higgins, administrator, Genesis Senior Living-Aledo. "Our staff will be trained in memory care to provide the highest level of care to our residents." "We recognize the stress and challenges caregivers experience when providing for a family member with Alzheimer's disease or related disorders. Genesis is pleased to add this high quality service in a convenient location in Mercer County and near the Quad Cities."

The mission of the Mercer Foundation for Health is to provide the best quality health care for the people of the Mercer County area. The foundation accomplishes its mission by supporting population health programs and keeping pace with the ever changing world of health care. It was 45 years ago, in January of 1971, when residents moved into then the new Mercer County Nursing Home.
