Herald-Times (Bloomington, IN) - 7/23/2016

July 23--Bloomington'sCouncil for Community Accessibility is celebrating the 26th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act by recognizing local businesses for meeting and exceeding accessibility standards.

The council will celebrate six new award recipients at a ceremony Monday at 4 p.m. in the City Hall Atrium. Red Lobster, King Dough, Rainbow Cafe, Northwest YMCA, Michael's Uptown Cafe and the CVS on Kirkwood Avenue will be honored. Refreshments will be served.

Following the ceremony, council members will go into the community to distribute newly updated AccessAbility decals to businesses already recognized for accessibility. More than 150 Bloomington businesses have received the decal since the early 1990s.

Volunteer surveyors assess businesses according to the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act, focusing particularly on parking, paths of entry, entrance doors, service accessibility and bathrooms.

Signed into law on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act was the nation's first comprehensive civil rights law addressing the needs of people with disabilities, prohibiting discrimination in employment, public services, public accommodations and telecommunications.
