Funding will make YMCA more accessible

Brandon Sun, The (Manitoba, Canada) - 7/31/2015

Larry Maguire, MP for Brandon-Souris, announced that the federal government is giving the Dood Cristall Family YMCA in Brandon, $14,958 to make the facility more accessible.

"I am committed to ensuring all Westman residents, especially those with disabilities can access the programs and services offered at the YMCA," Maguire said.

The funding will be used to renovate the family change room and install a shower and change room lift system.

"We want to ensure that we are accessible to all individuals in the Brandon and Westman area. The addition of a shower and change lift in our family change room will allow any user of our pool who uses a wheelchair or requires an attendant to access the YMCA more comfortably," said Lon Cullen, CEO of the Brandon YMCA.

The funding was provided through the federal government's enabling accessibility fund. The fund supports the costs of construction and renovations related to improving physical accessibility and safety for people with disabilities.
